School Age (Primary and Secondary)
As part of the newly introduced ‘Coventry Speech and Language Training Pathway’, the goal is that one member of staff from every Coventry School will be trained on how to implement the Elklan Speech and Language approach in their school by the end of this academic year, 2025-26.
Elklan is an externally accredited course which will improve your ability to communicate with your pupils and their ability to communicate with you. The training course equips practitioners with strategies to support language and communication development in the classroom and recognise and address SLCN. It is not an intervention but a whole school approach and schools that have implemented it have identified improvements in both learning and behaviour for those children with SLCN and SEND.
During this year we have the funding to offer every school a free place at the Elklan training. We are offering a range of training styles- either 2 hours a week for 10 weeks or a 3 full day option. In the Autumn term, 25 Primary Schools participated in the training and during the Spring term, 3 courses will be available with 12 spaces in each.
Places are limited to one practitioner per school. The expectation is that attendees will cascade the core methods and strategies to colleagues within their setting. Therefore, participants must have the confidence and experience to train staff at all levels within their school.
Attendees will also join Coventry Communicators—a network of Elklan-trained practitioners across the city—providing ongoing access to further training, resources, and peer support.
This training forms part of the new Speech and Language training offer as shared with SENCos at the Summer SENCO briefing and Primary Partnership meeting in December.
